What ID Is Usually Needed for a Notary Appointment?

Before a mobile notary appointment, the signer should have a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID ready to present. In most cases, this is the first thing the notary will need to verify before the notarization can proceed.

Common forms of acceptable ID often include:

  • Driver’s license

  • State-issued ID card

  • U.S. passport

  • Foreign passport, if it is valid and acceptable for identification purposes

  • Military ID, when applicable

The ID should clearly show the signer’s photo, name, signature, and should not be expired. The name on the ID should also reasonably match the name on the document.

A notary cannot move forward if the signer does not have proper identification at the appointment. That is why it is important to confirm ahead of time that the ID is available and still valid.

For mobile notary appointments, the best practice is simple: have the signer ready, have the documents ready, and have the valid ID in hand before the notary travels.
